Arts Management in the Real World Take 1

Arts Management is a new, as well as, an up-and-coming degree program that concentrates on the development and management of arts organizations. For example, if you want to manage a studio, gallery, or a museum, this is the perfect program to be a part of. However, there is a lot more you can do with this degree. More specifically, there are careers such as jobs in the music industry, dance/choreographic world, and any sort of business organization you can think of. However, in Purchase College, in my personal opinion, has created a great starting point for its new Arts Management program. When I say "a start" I mean it is extremely vague and requires much less generalizations and much more detailed classes. For example, for Arts Management students there is only one, vague and generalized class for "Arts and Entertainment Law", whereas in other schools that have a wonderful reputation for business, there are several classes to spread out and better explain what you need to know about the Law in the Arts world. When I went to interview for my internship position at Warner Music Group, the three people interviewing me were fascinated with the idea of an "Arts Management" program so they asked many questions about its content. They even laughed at the idea that people actually rely on this program to lead them to a career in the arts. There has to be more detail and explanation for each course, otherwise, there will be no chance of an "Arts Management" student snagging a job over someone else who has a business degree from a school such as Baruch College or even Queens college. They have to find a way to equalize the AM program with other business degrees. Once they have perfected the programs intent and specified its generalizations I really believe it could be a great program. I, however, really enjoy each class I take in this program, but it is because of the competitive work world that I plan to transfer to a school with better credentials to give me some kind of "up" in the face of a job opening after I graduate.

  1. As a student in the certificate program for Arts Management, I can relate to some of your ideas in this blog post; I do think that Arts Management is perhaps a bit vague of a major title-I see it rather as an umbrella term for business and marketing of the arts. It would be a bit more helpful if students could perhaps have concentrations within the major. One could for example be an Arts Management major with a concentration in marketing. This is still a very new major, but I suspect that over the next few years, a lot of great changes will be made and it will become a more concise program.
